Reacting to the CT Power Plant Explosion

On Sunday morning, I was shocked to hear breaking news from Hartford, CT. The Kleen Energy Systems plant, a natural gas-powered electricity plant still under construction, had exploded. As I shared the news with others, we were all saddened to learn of the extent of the losses and damages.

As of Monday, 5 workers had lost their lives and more than 20 had been injured. The cause of the explosion has not been conclusively determined.

The Southeast has suffered many losses in the extraction of fossil fuels from our region, from production of electricity from fossil fuels, and the waste created by these processes. We at the Southern Energy Network stand in solidarity with those impacted by this disaster.

We have hope for a clean, just energy future, where human losses are unheard of in producing our nation’s energy.

Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased and injured workers.
